E-SAFETY + COMPUTING

The Computing curriculum is one of the major changes in the new national curriculum published in 2014. Below you will find the overall aims of the curriculum; e-safety being one of the most important strands that yourselves as parents can support your child with at home.

The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation

  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems

  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems

  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology (e-safety)

E-safety refers to the way in which children and adults communicate using the internet. In an internet based world where we almost solely rely on this for our communication; it is important for children to learn how to use the internet:

  • safely by keeping personal information safe

  • respectfully when communicating to others

  • responsibly by recognising acceptable and unacceptable behaviours

  • cautiously and know when and how to report concerns about content and contact.

How can you help your child at home?

You can help your child at home in various ways:

  • Staying unto date with e-safety newsletters on this page

  • Reminding children to communicate online in the same way they would in person

  • Helping them to identify acceptable content and contact and who to report to if they find something that concerns them.
