We run an afternoon session, which runs from 12:15pm until 3:15pm. As children come into the session, they will be encouraged to independently take their coats off and place their bags in the correct place. The children will then sit on the floor as they come in to say good afternoon and take the register.
The children will begin to learn sounds in preschool, focusing on one new sound a week. They will learn the sound, the picture cards to match and the hand writing phase; this will support them in their reading and writing when they go into Reception. We will match some of the activities that week to the sound they have learnt.
For example, for ‘a’, they may do apple printing.
During the free flow part of the session, the areas that the children can access independently are: the creative area, maths area, construction area, mark making table, small world area and the reading corner. The children also have the opportunity to use the learning garden where they can access the water area, sand area, den building area and the mud kitchen.
Some of the examples of adult led activities are as follows:
• Name recognition and writing
• Role play
• Number Land
• Circle time
• Ring games out on the playground
• Activities linked to the theme
• Nature Walks
• Den Building
During the session, the children have snack; we use this time as a social time where they learn to make healthy choices, discuss hygiene and model positive table manners. This also is a time where the children build relationships with the other children in their group.
At the end of the session, the children gather as a whole group on the carpet and listen to a story or sing songs. The session finishes at 3:15pm where the parents wait at the gate and a staff member will supervise collection.
