"I enjoy reading all the fun books in school and helping my friends if they don’t know a word" - Ffion White

READING & PHONICS

At Finlay Community School, we have devised an approach to teaching synthetic phonics that meets the needs of our pupils using elements from Letters and SoundsJolly Phonics and Read Write Inc. (RWI).

Children in Reception and Key Stage 1 follow the synthetic phonics approach. It’s an approach to teaching phonics in which individual letters or letter sounds are blended to form groups of letters or sounds, and those groups are then blended to form complete words – we’ve produced a guide to help you with this – Phonics Guide.
