WELCOME TO

YEAR 3R CLASS PAGE

We are a dedicated and hard working team at Finlay and all our staff contribute to the children’s learning and well-being, offering many activities to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum but also to enrich the children’s cultural capital and develop our school SMILE values.

The adults working in our class are: Mr Mark Ricketts and Mrs Lorraine Herbert.

If you need advice on any information below, get in touch by calling us on 01452 530310 or email: mark.ricketts@finlay.gloucs.sch.uk

What are we learning about in the Autumn Term?

Our theme for the Autumn Term is Rock and Roll: The Stone Age and Iron Age. The children will be learning about this Pre-Historic Era in history, looking at what life was like during the Stone Age, as well as looking at artefacts to find out information about the past. This includes finding out more about Stonehenge and Skara Brae. This theme is rich in historical knowledge, and will set the chronological foundations for the children’s learning throughout Key Stage 2.

Within this theme, we will also have opportunity to develop our Art and DT skills, by creating a cave painting project, where the children will create watercolour wash backgrounds, layered with painted details, including animals. The children will then use charcoal and oil pastel to add extra detail. The children will also have the opportunity to create a silhouette inspired painting based on Stonehenge.

Throughout this unit, we will be rewriting the story ‘Stone Age Boy’ as well as writing a play script for the argument between Barney and his Sister in Stig of the Dump.

In Science, we will be learning about Animals including humans, focussing on nutrition and what our bodies need, as well as looking at the skeletons of humans and animals. We will then be studying Light, looking at how light is reflected, as well as exploring how shadows are made, and how the size of shadows can change.

In RE, we are exploring two big questions from the Gloucester Agreed Syllabus: ‘What do Christians learn from the Creation Story?’ and ‘What is it like for someone to follow God?’

In PE, we will be developing the skills required to play football, which we will then apply to mini invasion games, as well as developing practical skills in gymnastics.

In Jigsaw/PSHE and RSE, we will be learning about ‘Being Me in My World’ and ‘Celebrating Difference’.

What are we learning about in the Spring Term?

Our theme for the Spring Term is ‘Deadly Disasters’ – a Geography based theme. During this theme, the children will be learning more about the natural disasters that occur in different locations, including volcanoes and earthquakes, understanding where they are found, how they happen and their key geographical features. The children will be thinking about disasters that have happened in the past, as well as those that have happened more recently, and the impact that these have had on the lives of residents.

In Art and DT, the children will be creating art prints inspired by Hokusai’s many depictions of Mount Fuji, looking at the 36 views of Mount Fuji and the Great Wave. In DT, the children will be constructing a volcano, choosing suitable techniques to strengthen their design.

Our learning in Science will see us develop our understanding of chemistry and physics, with a particular focus on rocks, forces and magnets. The children will learn how to: compare and group together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties; describe in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rocks and recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter. During the ‘forces and magnets’ unit of work, children will: compare how things move on different surfaces; notice that some forces need contact between two objects but magnetic forces can act at a distance; observe how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials but not others; compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet and identify some magnetic materials; describe magnets as having two poles and predict whether two magnets will attract or repel each other depending on which way the poles are facing.

In RE, we will be exploring another two big questions from the Gloucester Agreed Syllabus, this time answering: ‘How do festivals and worship show what matters to a Muslim?’ And ‘How do festivals and family life show what matters to Jewish people?’

In PE, we will be developing our practical skills in dance, as well as developing practical game skills by playing invasion games. We will also be developing our practical skills in athletics.

In Jigsaw/PSHE and RSE, we will be learning about ‘Dreams and Goals’ and ‘Healthy Me’.

Home Learning
Please see a copy of our home learning activity sheet for the Autumn Term (Rock and Roll) and Spring Term (Deadly Disasters). These grids includes a range of activities for children to complete at home. Evidence of these home learning tasks can be uploaded to Seesaw or completed in home learning books.

The children should also access Times Tables Rockstars and Spelling Shed at least three times a week using their individual log ins.

They also are required to read their reading book to an adult at least three times a week, and record this in their reading logs.
