We are a dedicated and hard working team at Finlay and all our staff contribute to the children’s learning and well-being, offering many activities to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum but also to enrich the children’s cultural capital and develop our school SMILE values.

The adults working in our class are: Miss Zaynab Moosa, Mrs Lorraine Herbert and Miss Claire Willoughby 

What are we learning about in the Autumn Term?

Our theme for the Autumn Term is Rock and Roll: The Stone Age and Iron Age. The children will be learning about this Pre-Historic Era in history, looking at what life was like during the Stone Age, as well as looking at artefacts to find out information about the past. This includes finding out more about Stonehenge and Skara Brae. This theme is rich in historical knowledge, and will set the chronological foundations for the children’s learning throughout Key Stage 2.

Within this theme, we will also have opportunity to develop our Art and DT skills, by creating a cave painting project, where the children will create watercolour wash backgrounds, layered with painted details, including animals. The children will then use charcoal and oil pastel to add extra detail. The children will also have the opportunity to create a silhouette inspired painting based on Stonehenge.

Throughout this unit, we will be rewriting the story ‘Stone Age Boy’ as well as writing a play script for the argument between Barney and his Sister in Stig of the Dump.

In Science, we will be learning about Animals including humans, focussing on nutrition and what our bodies need, as well as looking at the skeletons of humans and animals. We will then be studying Light, looking at how light is reflected, as well as exploring how shadows are made, and how the size of shadows can change.

In RE, we are exploring two big questions from the Gloucester Agreed Syllabus: ‘What do Christians learn from the Creation Story?’ and ‘What is it like for someone to follow God?’

In PE, we will be developing the skills required to play football, which we will then apply to mini invasion games, as well as developing practical skills in gymnastics.

In Jigsaw/PSHE and RSE, we will be learning about ‘Being Me in My World’ and ‘Celebrating Difference’.
